We work with wool everyday, but it isn’t often we get the opportunity to work directly with a wool breed so uncommon. When we found this specific flock of CVM and Romeldale ewes in Idaho and Oregon, we were immediately caught by the quality of the wool, and the incredible range of naturally occurring shades. Bright white, silvery grey, deep chocolate tones, all found out the field. Perhaps more important than the beauty of these colors, the wool we found was impressively crimped, with a long, strong staple. Before we even had a chance to put it in the mill, we knew the yarn made from this fiber would be springy, light, and soft.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"large-title\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eSpinning Shear\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"rte\"\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eIn many ways, our challenge in spinning such a unique and wonderful fiber was to get out of the way, and let the fiber speak for itself. We decided to spin this at a versatile dk weight, warm enough to work for a thick winter sweater, or a drapey shawl, all depending on the needle size used. Woolen spun yarn can be knit at a range of gauges, and we find this yarn can be comfortably knit on a US 4, all the way through a US 8. The fabric created from this yarn will have an impossibly light, soft, and warm quality. To add strength and durability we aggressively combined three plies together on the twister to create a ropy and more durable yarn. This balance is challenging to achieve. If you add too much twist, the yarn becomes kinky and heavy. We wanted to engineer this bulky to be light and relaxed without compromising strength. In addition, we developed TURBINE to create exceptional textures and stitch definition in the knitting. Today, three generations of the Moore family continue to work the farm, raising a Merino–Dorset cross. The sheep at Cottage Hill Farm are the descendants of the old Merino fine wool stock, crossed with Dorset, producing sheep that lamb well and yield good meat and wool. Although the crossing diminishes some of the wool's softness, it adds a robust crimp and spring that gives the resulting fleece a bounce and strength not found in fine wool alone. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p5\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eSpinning Shear Merino-Dorset\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p4\"\u003eThe yarn we have created from this fiber is a lofty, woolen-spun, 2-ply with next-to-skin softness and an underlying strength. This part of Ohio was renowned in the 19\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century for producing the highest-quality merino in the United States. Today, three generations of the Moore family continue to work the farm, raising a Merino–Dorset cross. The sheep at Cottage Hill Farm are the descendants of the old Merino fine wool stock, crossed with Dorset, producing sheep that lamb well and yield good meat and wool. Although the crossing diminishes some of the wool's softness, it adds a robust crimp and spring that gives the resulting fleece a bounce and strength not found in fine wool alone. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p5\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eSpinning Shear Merino-Dorset\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p4\"\u003eThe yarn we have created from this fiber is a lofty, woolen-spun, 2-ply with next-to-skin softness and an underlying strength. Most woolen-spun yarns can be knit at a wide variety of gauges, and while this yarn is no exception, it loves being knit on bigger needles than you might expect, giving it room to bloom and breathe. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p4\"\u003eLike many domestic wools, this yarn contains vegetable matter, and you will likely notice this in the skein of yarn. It’s best to remove the vegetable matter as you knit, but don't be fooled by this yarn's rustic appearance in the skein. Once you wash it (and we recommend using a liquid soap like Dr. Bronner's or Dawn for your first wash), all the residual dust of the farm washes away, leaving a delightfully soft and cloud-like fabric with a tendency to puff up and round out.
